Low-interest loans for home owners at Alaska

A federal agency is taking applications from homeowners in rural Alaska for low-interest loans to make home improvements, including those that lower energy consumption. Loans of up to $20,000 at 1 percent interest for up to 20 years are available, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture´s Rural Development agency. Grants of up to $7,500 also are available for very low income people ages 62 and older, the agency said.

Eligible applicants must own a home in need of repair and lack resources to make the fixes; they must meet "very low income" criteria, and they must live somewhere other than Anchorage, Juneau or Fairbanks and adjacent urban areas, the agency said.
