Farmers are not getting fresh loans from banks

The UPA government´s decision to write off farm loans has had little impact on the ground in Vidarbha.

Many farmers are not getting fresh loans, as banks have still not received directions from the Centre that previous loans need to be waived.

The Finance Minister has announced that guidelines will be issued to all banks by the end of May and this will certainly be music to the ears of farmers in Vidarbha.

With just two weeks to go for the rains, 38-year-old Shyamrao Munde desperately needs to start sowing for the new season.

However, he doesn´t have the money and little hope of a bank loan because he still owes banks Rs 12,000 - a debt that still stands. Even though Shyamrao is among the few farmers in Vidarbha with a two hectare plot, which made him eligible for the loan waiver announced in the budget three months ago.

´´The government has not waived our debts and that is why we do not get fresh loans. The banks have no answer and monsoon is nearing,´´ says Shyamrao.

The banks say that they are still waiting for the government directive on the waiver.

´´We don´t have any information from the government and till we get that and study it, we cannot act,´´ says Subhash Korpe, chairman, Akola Central Cooperative Bank Limited.

With just two weeks to go for the rains, farmers fear a wasted season. The waiver when it finally comes could be just too late.
